In Conversation with Czech Author and Translator Viktorie Hanišová

Thursday 22 October 2026
10:30 - 11:45
Seminar Room 10, St Anne's College

Viktorie Hanišová, Mary Orsak (Oxford)

Join the acclaimed Czech author Viktorie Hanišová in conversation with Mary Orsak, a third-year DPhil student in MML, for an informal discussion on translation: both the experience of having one’s work translated and the practice of translating.

Viktorie Hanišová explores themes of race, trauma, and motherhood in her acclaimed novels, including her debut, Anežka (2015), and her 2018 novel Houbařka, translated as The Mushroom Gatherer and published in English by Seagull Books in 2025. Her most recent novel, Hoří ti táta (Your Dad’s Burning), was published this year and examines the intersection of unresolved family traumas and the rise of political extremism. Her works have been published in thirteen languages. Hanišová also works as a language teacher and a published translator, translating more than twenty works of fiction and non-fiction from English, German, and Georgian, including Bernadine Evaristo’s Booker Prize-winning Girl, Woman, Other and works by Sigmund Freud.
